Quali was 1. Pol Espargaro 2. Alex Rins 3. Takaaki Nakagami. Maverick Vinales had to start from the pit lane due to having to put engine no. 6 into his chassis and rule irregularities involving valves. Too complicated to discuss here but it seems Yamaha has fallen foul of not being on top of the technical regulations.

The Race:

Off the line, it was Pol Espargaro Alex Rins and Joan Mir taking the top three. On this first lap, Aleix Espargaro and Fabio Quartararo had a synchronised crash, not touching each other but dropping it at the same corner at the same time! Fabio restarted, Aleix did not. Quartararo had a weekend go from bad to worse and compromises his championship status with this latest incident. Has the pressure got to him, time will tell?

Four laps in Alex Rins took the lead from Espargaro with Joan Mir slotted into third, then second behind his Suzuki teammate.

The race took on a metronomic format with places not changing until, with 10 laps to go, Joan Mir took the lead ahead of Rins and Pol Espargaro.

This is a short report because, well, not a lot happened, except that Joan Mir won his first Moto GP race, which is cool, and he leads the World Championship by 37 points ahead of Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins who are on equal points.

#1 Joan Mir Team Suzuki Ecstar | #2 Alex Rins Team Suzuki Ecstar | #3 Pol Espargaro Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

Valentino Rossi was back for this race post Covid19 positive but did not finish. Alex Marquez crashed out. The penalised Vinales finished 13th and Fabio, seemingly unsettled was 14th.

So the rising star is Joan Mir, calm, cool and collected would best describe this likeable, polite young man who is now poised to take the World Championship. It is, as they say, his to lose.
