Qualifying:

Quali brought up a surprise with Pol Espargaro putting it in P1, Francesco Bagnaia P2 and Fabio Quartararo P3.

Pre-race Silverstone GP this year was all about Valentino Rossi! The legend has raced in the GP paddock for 26 years and transformed the public perception of the sport. It’s probably fair to say that before him there was only really Barry Sheene and Freddie Spencer who reached out beyond the hardcore fans, but Vale did it bigger and wider than anyone. However, all good things must come to an end, and in recent seasons it has been hard to watch as Valentino has struggled to be competitive, for whatever reasons. He leaves a legacy, with the VR46 Academy and the talent therein, but also beyond that with riders such as Fabio Quartararo, Raul Fernandez, Pedro Acosta, just some of those who have emulated the great multi champion, to whom he is a hero. The future is in good hands. Grazie Vale!

The Race:

Off the line, it was Pol Espargaro and Fabio Quartararo who led the way, with Aleix Espargaro in P3, and that was how it looked on the timing screen for lap one. Within that lap, Marc Marquez slid out taking Jorge Martin with him. It was an over ambitious move from Marquez, to say the least, and unnecessary at the earliest stage of the race. Not sure if we are seeing a little desperation or frustration from Marc, let’s hope not but time will tell. Marquez did apologise later, but the move ruined Jorge’s race after he has been doing so well recently. Also within that lap, but better news, it was an Espargaro one/two with Pol leading and Aleix P2.

Three laps in and it was still Pol on the Honda and Aleix on the Aprilia upfront with Francesco Bagnaia keeping the Ducati in third. Away from the frenetic front runners, there was a young man quietly going about his business, Fabio on the Yamaha was looking calm and collected, and waiting.

With sixteen laps to go Fabio Quartararo slipped past Pol Espargaro in a master class overtaking manoeuvre, leaving Pol P2 and his Brother Aleix P3. Once Fabio was in the lead and the track was his own, he put a 1.007 gap on Aleix who was now P2, within a lap. Without interference, Fabio was able to engage the smooth, flowing style that is almost unique to him, and which the other riders find hard to match.

Nine laps to go and Alex Rins hauled in Aleix Espargaro and slipped past with ease, Fabio now 3.248 seconds ahead of the newly appointed P2 of Rins.

The Result:

Last lap and it was Fabio Quartararo in the lead with a 3.329 second gap over P2 man Alex Rins, and Aleix Espargaro P3, and that was how it stayed. So the race result was Fabio Quartararo, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP, P1, Alex Rins, Team Suzuki Ecstar, P2, and Aleix Espargaro, Aprilia Racing Team Gresini. Three happy and well deserved podium finishers.
