Last year around this time, the MotoGP class were caught out and left out. Whilst the Moto 2 and 3 guys had been testing at Qatar the MotoGP riders were at home and that is where they stayed, as the global pandemic known to us now as the deadly familiar Coronavirus worked its way inexorably around the world.
Very few at that time could predict the outcome of the virus from Wuhan, sadly now we all know, and we reach out to all those who have been affected, we here at Bike Directory have suffered losses, so that is from the heart.
Soon though, Dorna, with their great organisation put together what turned out to be an amazing 2020 season, and I am not sure about you, but we looked forward to the races week by week, to have some time away from the news, usually bad.
So now it’s 2021 and once again Dorna have performed, and this time so will the MotoGP class.
Firstly let’s address the elephant in the room. No Marc Marquez, despite working as hard as he could over the winter, the lack of fusion in his humerus has meant he will not start the first two races. Then there is Andrea Dovizioso, how can Dovi not be in the championship? There is talk of Aprilia, but we will see, and hope.
Suzuki, as they say, pulled off a blinder in 2020, with the incredible talent that is Joan Mir, taking the World Championship in only his second year of MotoGP. Showing maturity beyond his years and a Zen-like calm he is a worthy champion. The grandmaster of the Suzuki camp has gone, Davide Brivio taking up the challenge of running the Alpine (Renault) Formula One team. The foundation is there now, Suzuki looks strong.
Then there is the prince who was to be king, Fabio Quartararo, who stormed to a lead early days in 2020, but who seemingly let the pressure get to him, and fell behind. Guess what, pre-season he’s back and with a bang. Yamaha looking good with Maverick also, and Petronas Yamaha SRT with Valentino Rossi and Franco Morbidelli. A quarter of a century, just think about it, that is how long Vale has been in the MotoGP paddock, and still fast and still loving it.
We could go on and on with each team, but we won’t, plenty of time to do that from this weekend with our regular reports and insights into our favourite Motor Sport series that is Dorna MotoGP.
See you there…
