Qualifying

Quali had Tatsuki Suzuki on pole, with Jeremy Alcoba P2 and Andrea Migno P3. Last time winner the very cool Pedro Acosta, was P13, so far quali has not been Pedro’s forte, not that it has hindered him! Jaume Masia P15!

The Race

Lap one and 22 to go and it was Tatsuki Suzuki to blast off from pole and take the lead with Andrea Migno and Gabriel Rodrigo following. Then shock, horror as John McPhee high sided from 8th to out of the race, that’s four races and four no scores for McPhee this season. Twenty laps to go and it was Gabriel Rodrigo P1, Suzuki and Darryn Binder in pursuit, Alcoba had to take his first of two long lap penalties for being naughty, dawdling on track in quali. It was a tight group of ten riders in line, then with 18 laps to go Rodrigo crashed out from the lead, this leaving Deniz Oncu leading and Pedro Acosta P2, Binder P3.

Deniz Oncu has always been quick, way back to when he raced against his brother Can and others in the Red Bull Rookies, but since moving into the Moto3 GP class his craft has been wanting, so it was good to see this form at last. From 18 laps to go, lap after lap it was Deniz Oncu and Pedro Acosta swapping P1, and it was a chance to see the different riding styles, Oncu nervy and aggressive and Acosta smooth and calculated, way beyond his 16 years. Darryn Binder and Jaume Masia had now come to play but it was the young guns at the front.

Ten laps to go and Tatsuki Suzuki dropped it all on his own, end of the race for Suzukisan. Meanwhile, Oncu was doing a great job of keeping the others at bay, including Pedro Acosta in P2, or was he, because we have seen in the last few races that Pedro has a holistic approach to his racing, he is probably a good chess player (if he plays) as he calculates every move, his and others.

Apart from a brief P1 from Alcoba and Fenati, Deniz Oncu held station, his pit board with three laps to go saying “Relax”, his pit crew very aware that he was riding on the edge. Coming into the last lap it was Oncu P1 Jaume Masia P2 and Pedro Acosta P3, and it was close with the three Red Bull sponsored KTM machines looking for a historic finish. Then the young maestro struck, Pedro Acosta once again judging his overtake of Masia and Oncu to perfection to take the lead, leaving Masia P2 and Oncu P3. Bang! Deniz went in too hot and took out Jaume and Darryn Binder, leaving them scattered on the tarmac.

The Result

So over the line, it was Pedro Acosta Red Bull KTM Ajo P1, Romano Fenati Sterilgarda Max Racing Team Husqvarna P2, and Jeremy Alcoba Indonesian Racing Gresini Moto3 Honda P3 (Alcoba having taken 2 long lap penalties)

Deniz Oncu was told to relax, and he didn’t, he let Pedro Acosta fluster him and took out Masia and Binder, all losing out on vital points. We like Deniz, he’s a nice kid and quick, but that’s just it, Pedro Acosta is younger chronologically, but mentally he is way above the rest, and quick. We all want to see Deniz and Jaume and Izan Guevara do well, but guys, you are going to have to raise your game whilst Pedro is in town.
