Moto2 – Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland. Sachsenring 2022

Qualification:

Sam Lowes has been having a lacklustre season so far, so it was good to see him put the Marc VDS Kalex on pole at the Sachsenring. P2 was Albert Arenas and on form Augusto Fernandez P3. After a P6 in the race in Catalunya, Pedro Acosta did not help himself with only a P11 in quali, but he is a Sunday man, as he proved so many times on his way to winning the Moto3 World Championship.

The Race:

Sam Lowes shot away at the start to take the lead with homeboy Marcel Shrotter in P2, and Augusto Fernandez in P3. Pedro Acosta made a good start and took P6 on the first lap.

On lap five, Augusto Fernandez sliced past Shrotter to take P2 and started to chase Sam Lowes looking smooth in the lead. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta was in P5 and working hard to follow teammate Fernandez, not wanting him to get away so early in the race. Within a lap, Augusto Fernandez slipped past Sam Lowes, making it look easy as he took the lead, Acosta now P4.

On lap sixteen, Pedro Acosta hauled in Sam Lowes and took P2, as his teammate Fernandez was holding a comfortable lead, leaving Sam Lowes in P3 and Marcel Shrotter in P4. With seven laps to go Celestino Vietti crashed out in an own fault low side, seriously affecting his championship position, at that moment with 133 points against Ai Ogura on 125 as he held P8.

As it came to the last lap Augusto Fernandez had an 8.9 second lead over teammate Pedro Acosta in P2, and Sam Lowes in P3. Over the finish line it was the same, as Fernandez made a huge leap in his championship position, cutting his gap to Vietti from 37 to 12 points in one race, and now third in the championship for Augusto.

The Results:

Augusto Fernandez, Red Bull KTM Ajo, Kalex, P1. Pedro Acosta, Red Bull KTM Ajo, Kalex, P2. Sam Lowes, Elf Marc VDS Racing Team, Kalex, P3.
