MotoGP – Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix of Deutschland. Sachsenring 2022

Qualification:

Francesco Bagnaia once again took pole position, Fabio Quartararo in P2, knowing that a good start would be crucial for this race, and Johann Zarco in P3. King of the ring, Marc Marquez, was, of course, absent due to his recovery from the recent operation, having won the last eight races at Sachsenring. Who would take the crown in 2022?

The Race:

Fabio Quartararo started the race on the medium rear tyre, as opposed to most on the hard, a risky strategy, but a decision based on the need to get to the front and stay there. It was an equal start from Bagnaia and Quartararo as they battled for the lead, it was Fabio who took the spoils at first. On lap two, Bagnaia took the lead from Quartararo, but Fabio, knowing how critical holding the lead was to the race, went straight back under Pecco and into P1. This left Bagnaia P2, with Aleix Espargaro P3 and Johann Zarco P4.

Lap four and drama at the ‘ring as Francesco Bagnaia crashed out, perhaps once again, the pressure of catching Fabio that bridge too far for the Italian. Fabio now had a 1.227 gap over P2 man Johann Zarco and Aleix Espargaro in P3. Jack Miller was in P7, having taken a long lap penalty. Joan Mir also crashed on the same lap as Bagnaia, leaving his Suzuki in the dust, as unfortunately is the team, leaving the paddock at year end.

As it came to the last lap, Fabio Quartararo had the lead since lap two, twenty-eight laps of master class riding, he managed a deteriorating medium rear tyre and held off Johann Zarco with a 5.4 second lead as they finished the race. Zarco was impressive, staying in contention should Fabio make a mistake, and Jack Miller making his way to a solid P3.

The Results:

P1, Fabio Quartararo, Monster energy Yamaha MotoGP. P2, Johann Zarco, Prima Pramac Racing, Ducati. P3, Jack Miller Ducati Lenovo Team.

We do not know if Fabio plays chess, but he ran this race like he does, making the right decision on the medium rear tyre, taking the lead from lap two, knowing that this was an essential strategy. Time and time again, he makes up for the superior power of the Ducati. He uses the handling of the Yamaha, and rides it like clockwork for the win. Right now, it’s flawless Fabio.
