The Guevara revolution, eazy for Izan in Sachsenring

Moto3 – Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland. Sachsenring 2022

Qualifying:

Youth and experience were the hallmarks of the qualifying results, with youngster Izan Guevara taking pole position. Dennis Foggia took P2 and the rookie Daniel Holgado P3. Recent frontrunner and championship leader, Sergio Garcia, was P8.

The Race:

Izan Guevara made a clean start to maintain his pole place and on the first lap made his intentions to the rest of the field quite clearly taking the lead, with Dennis Foggia P2 and Tatsuki Suzuki P3. A first corner incident saw Carlos Tatay, John McPhee and Riccardo Rossi crash out, Rossi unable to re-start, Tatay to blame here with an over ambitious move under braking. Kaito Toba and Deniz Oncu were given double long lap penalties for jump starts, and Oncu was perhaps too anxious to get away from P10.

As the race pace settled it was Izan Guevara in the lead with Daniel Holgado on his case in P2, Dennis Foggia P3 and teammate Tatsuki Suzuki P4, and tight on Foggia, these riders part of a leading group of nine. Sergio Garcia was looking hurried as he did not want his teammate Guevara too far up the field and gaining points, and made his way to P4 and closed in on Tatsuki Suzuki.

With 18 laps to go Izan Guevara was slowly edging away from the leading group with a 1.1 second advantage over P2 man Dennis Foggia who had Sergio Garcia chasing him down in P3 with only 0.284 between them.

It is not often we have to say this, but this Moto3 race was strung out and a little boring, with Izan Guevara out front from the start to finish, and the top three places not changing for eighteen laps, until the last lap. Sergio Garcia had been in P3 for most of the race, but on the last lap made a last ditch move to get past P2 man Dannis Foggia, and did it, only to be taken back by Foggia as they headed for the finish line.
