Qualifying:

Qualification had Raul Fernandez on pole, with Sam Lowes P2, and Augusto Fernandez P3. This was another amazing feat by Raul, who is still suffering from a fracture in his right hand. After his win in Aragon, would he be able to sustain another full race distance? Read on.

The Race:

Although Raul Fernandez took the initial lead, Sam Lowes was P1 on the first lap, with Raul close by, and Aron Canet in P3. Five laps in, Lowes was still in the lead, Raul Fernandez lost P2 to Aron Canet, who was chasing after Lowes who had a 0.544 gap at that point.

Seventeen laps to go and Aron Canet found his way past Sam Lowes having already pushed past Raul Fernandez just a lap earlier, or less. Canet seemed to have found something and was on the move, but so was Raul with an easy move past Sam Lowes on lap 9, with Remy Gardner now in P4.

Eleven laps to go, Raul Fernandez shot past Aron Canet who had no answer for the rookie sensation, so now Raul was in the lead with Canet P2 and Lowes P3 with Remy still P4. The speculation and perhaps logic for this race was that Fernandez would suffer fatigue from the injury to his hand, but in these latter stages, it was quite obvious Raul had not read that script.

Having overtaken Sam Lowes on lap 17, Remy had been stalking Canet and his teammate Fernandez, and with two laps to go he made his move on Aron Canet and took P2 behind Raul, who was now on his last warning for track limit infringement, one more and he would have to go through the long lap loop and ruin his chances for this race. However, Raul was calm and looking set as Remy started to push forward and chase Fernandez for the win.

In the last lap it seemed like Remy Gardner had a rocket boost on his bike, he took 3/10ths out of Raul in this lap, and looked like he might take the win, and that he wanted to, but then he had a scary moment, with the bike moving under him as he perhaps asked too much of worn tyres. This dropped him back and into the claws of the ever-present Aron Canet, but soon it was all over and Raul Fernandez took the win, with Remy Gardner P2 and Aron Canet P3. Raul rode a well measured and brave race with his hand still visibly giving him pain as he took his glove off in parc ferme. It’s at times like these you see true championship material shining through.

The Results:

Raul Fernandez, Red Bull KTM Ajo, Kalex, P1. Remy Gardner, Red Bull KTM Ajo, Kalex, P2. Aron Canet, Inde Aspar Team, Boscoscuro, P3.
