If you had followed Quali and checked the results, then came to the race right at the beginning you would have been confused.

Sam Lowes had taken pole and Remy Gardner was second. However, the grid looked like this 1. Luca Marini 2. Marco Bezzecchi 3. Enea Bastianini.

Sam had a penalty hanging over from Austria and had to start from pit lane and Gardner, well Remy crashed out in the morning warm-up and sustained a fracture to his wrist and foot. We wish him a speedy and thorough recovery.

Off the line, it was Luca Marini, Bezzecchi and Bastianini in grid order for the first lap or so. Marco Schrotter then took third.

Twenty laps to go and we were back to status quo, with Marini leading, Bezzecchi second and Bastianini third. At this point, the fat lady might have well as come out and sung the song, because apart from Bezzecchi taking advantage of a Marini mistake on lap 7 and leading for a couple of laps, it was all over folks.

Luca Marini rode a superb race, consistent and measured, and considering the company he was in a credit to his ability. We would all like to see a bit more “racing” in Moto 2, but that may have to wait for later in this short season, as we head for the championship end. Let’s hope so. Of note, there were eight non-finishers in this race!
