Qualifying:
Quali saw Sam Lowes take pole for the second time in two races. Next to him Remy Gardner and Marco Bezzecchi. With no Brits in the MotoGP class with the departure of Cal to Yamaha testing, we look to Moto2 to fly the flag, and Sam is doing a great job. Jake Dixon has struggled with this wrist injury, but did well in last week’s race, and placed 5th in Quali.
The Race
Marco Bezzecchi, Sky Racing Team VR46, shot away at the start, Sam Lowes and Remy Gardner in close quarters, with the super talented rookie that is Raul Fernandez solid in fourth. After a couple of laps, a leading pack of four started to gap the others by 1.207, this being Marco Bezzecchi, Sam Lowes, Raul Fernandez and Remy Gardner.
Sixteen laps to go and Sam Lowes hit the front leaving Bezzecchi, Gardner and Raul Fernandez in his wake. At 14 to go, we lost Joe Roberts, Italtrans Racing Team, who had his own accident on the kerbs. Seven laps to go and Jake Dixon went down along with Marcel Schrotter, always a risk for Jake with his wrist injury, but he looked ok if a bit winded.
The Result
If we gave you a lap-by-lap account of the race it would sound like a broken record. Remy did step up and chased Sam to the line, but in the end, it was P1 Sam Lowes, Elf Marc VDS Racing Team, P2 Remy Gardner Red Bull KTM Ajo, P3 Raul Fernandez Red Bull KTM Ajo.
It is great to see Sam doing so well, however, Moto2 has already become lacklustre once again. We need the rookies to step it up, most likely Raul Fernandez will, and perhaps the other Moto3 insurgents will start to shine once we move to the European races, which is next, of course in Portimao, let’s hope so.
