Moto3 Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya: Barcelona 2022

Quali:

The front row looked solid for an exciting race with Dennis Foggia on pole, Deniz Oncu P2 and Izan Guevara P3. Missing from the race this weekend was Ayumu Sasaki, as he was in Mugello, but with fewer injuries than originally thought, a fractured clavicle was enough to keep him out though, we wish him a good recovery.

The Race:

Dennis Foggia must have known he had to get away at the start and to try and establish a gap from the grid, and he did just that, but Izan Guevara had him covered and was ever so close in P2 on lap one, with Riccardo Rossi in P3 from P6, but soon to lose the place to Sergio Garcia. With 18 laps to go Izan Guevara was in the lead, but over a few laps trading places with Sergio Garcia and Tatsuki Suzuki, Foggia dropped to P4. Fifteen laps to go and Foggia pulled off the track, looking down at his rear wheel, the chain broken and loose, his race over and the championship compromised. This left Suzuki in the lead with Sergio Garcia P2 and Deniz Oncu P3.

Tatsuki Suzuki was circulating in the lead, but with 13 laps to go, Daniel Holgado, David Salvador and Ryusei Yamanaka crashed out, the culprit, Yamanaka was the only rider to re-start from that group. Deniz Oncu had the lead briefly until sixteen-year-old David Munoz took the lead. The young sensation was showing the form a lot in the paddock were anticipating, Izan Guevara now in P2 and Jaume Masia P3. Adrian Fernandez led briefly, as did Oncu and Suzuki but with six laps to go Izan Guevara once again took the lead and looked determined to keep it that way, with teammate Sergio Garcia P2 and Deniz Oncu P3.

On the last lap, into the final sector, Izan Guevara had a 1.691 lead over David Munoz, who pushed his way past Sergio Garcia dropping him to P3 with the feisty Tatsuki Suzuki in P4 making progress on Garcia. Guevara took a sneaky look back at the chasing pack, Munoz pushed for the line and Suzuki pipped Garcia to take P3.

The Results:

Izan Guevara, Valresa GASGAS Aspar Team, P1. David Munoz, BOE Motorsports, KTM, P2. Tatsuki Suzuki, Leopard Racing, Honda, P3.

It was a sensational race for young David Munoz, in only his second GP race, who started from P20. One to watch!
