Moto3 – Gran Premio Red Bull De Espana. Jerez. May 1st 2022.

Qualification:

Quali had the young sensational rider, Izan Guevara, on pole. In P2 was the on-form Sergio Garcia, and in P3 the experienced Jaume Masia, the re-invigorated Masia, back on form after the psychological bashing he must have taken from Pedro Acosta in 2021, who, of course, won the championship, then moved on to Moto2.

The Race:

It was a textbook start for Sergio Garcia, who led the field on lap one, with Izan Guevara close by and Dennis Foggia P3, who had passed Masia, who was now P4. It seemed as if Izan Guevara did not know or care this was a 22 lap race, as he sliced past Garcia on lap two to take the lead, Garcia now P2 and Masia P3.

Seventeen laps to go and Jaume Masia had pushed his way past the GASGAS Aspar teammates Guevara and Garcia, this was full-on racing, but the youngsters, often cited for scary tactics were riding clean and showing just how much skill level these riders have developed in the class. Not long before Sergio Garcia was in the lead with Masia P2, then it was Masia again, then suddenly from P7 Xavier Artigas joined the party and took the lead. The top eight were so close, that it could be anyone taking the lead, and so it was with twelve laps to go Garcia was in P1 again.

Eight laps to go and Jaume Masia was in the lead, with Guevara P2 and now Deniz Oncu P3, Garcia P4 and Ayumu Sasaki P5. One notable loss from the front group was Dennis Foggia, now in P14 having spent time with the leading group, it can only be assumed he had mechanical problems, to be that far down that quickly. Over the next few laps, it was a four-way battle between Masia, Garcia, Oncu and Guevara.

As it came to the last lap Deniz Oncu was in the lead with Jaume Masia P2, Sergio Garcia P3 and Izan Guevara P4, but it was anyone of them for the win, this group so tightly bunched you could throw the proverbial blanket over them. Izan overtook Sergio then Sergio sliced through once again, as now Masia was in the lead with Oncu tucked in close behind. As it came to the last corner Izan Guevara pulled off an amazing move around the outside on the other three riders on the left-hand turn, retaking the racing line as he did so and securing the win in sensational style. This left Sergio Garcia P2, Masia P3 and Oncu P4. It was a classic masterclass move by the young Spanish rider, and it could be seen by his celebrations, he knew it!

The Results:

Izan Guevara, Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team P1. Sergio Garcia, Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team, P2. Jaume Masia, Red Bull KTM Ajo P3.

Not many races finish as they start, but this one did, with the top three grid positions taking the top three final places.
