Qualifying:

Quali had Tatsuki Suzuki on pole with Pedro Acosta P2 and Gabriel Rodrigo P3. Acosta finally breaking his quali woes with this result, previously having started much lower, although that has not stopped him from winning races.

During Quali, there was a high-speed crash involving three riders. The nineteen-year-old French/Swiss rider Jason Dupasquier was thrown from his bike and left on the track, then another bike hit him, and he was airlifted to hospital. With much sadness, we learnt on Sunday morning that Jason had passed away. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and all those who were close to him.

The riders in Moto3 were unaware of this tragedy before the race.

The Race:

Pedro Acosta nailed the start and led into the first corner, it was a clean and decisive move for the now 17-year-old, seemingly comfortable with his newly acquired front row position, Gabriel Rodrigo and Tatsuki Suzuki were following close by. Adrian Fernandez was taken out by Alberto Surra and then another crash with bikes tumbling into the kitty litter, four riders ended up out of the race, Deniz Oncu, Andrea Migno, Carlos Tatay and Max Koffler all going for an early shower.

On lap two, riders swarmed around Pedro Acosta, and from the chaos emerged Dennis Foggia in the lead then Pedro made a brief comeback before Foggia hit the front again. The pack was so tight Acosta found himself in P10 with Romano Fenati in the lead, Tatsuki Suzuki and Gabriel Rodrigo third. With 15 laps to go Foggia was again in the lead, but within two laps Pedro Acosta had made up the nine places and was once again in the lead. There was a train of twelve riders and with the slipstreaming on the straight almost any one of them could emerge P1.

With 9 laps to go Tatsuki Suzuki was in the lead with Gabriel Rodrigo and Darren Binder following. There was still a tight group of twelve riders at the front and Dennis Foggia was seventh at this stage, it was so close that the lead position was changing within half a lap, so much so that it was John McPhee, Darren Binder, Pedro Acosta, Romano Fenati and Dennis Foggia all at P1 in four laps!

The Result:

With 3 laps to go Pedro Acosta was in P1 and looking good for the win considering his recent form, Darren Binder P2 and Romano Fenati P3, with Foggia 7th at this stage. Last lap and Dennis Foggia had hit the front once more, with Fenati and Rodrigo close. Jaume Masia emerged from the pack and was P4. Over the line it was P1 Dennis Foggia Leopard Racing Honda, P2 Jaume Masia Red Bull KTM Ajo and P3 Gabriel Rodrigo Indonesian Racing Gresisni Moto3/Honda. Pedro Acosta ended up P8, probably wondering how that had come about, his only comfort his World Championship standing in first with 111 points, a 52-point lead over second-placed teammate Jaume Masia.

Moto3 is always close but this race was exceptional in how close, and how many riders hit P1 in the 20 laps. See you in a week at the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.
