Moto2 – Monster Energy British Grand Prix 07/08/2022

Qualification:

No surprises for the Moto2 grid after a five-week gap, with Augusto Fernandez on pole, Joe Roberts P2 and Ai Ogura P3. Jake Dixon was P6 at his home Grand Prix, with Sam Lowes out with a nasty shoulder injury after a pre-qualification crash.

The Race: 18 Laps

It was a close fought start to the Moto2 race as Alonso Lopez, Augusto Fernandez Joe Roberts and Ai Ogura all battled for the top spot, but it was Ogura who took the spoils on lap one to lead the race, with Lopez P2, Roberts P3 and Fernandez P4.

By lap two with 17 to go Alonso Lopez pulled ahead of Ai Ogura to take the lead, with Joe Roberts P3 and Augusto Fernandez P4. Meanwhile, Celestino Vietti, the championship leader in P9, but poised to take a long lap penalty for cutting across the line of riders waiting to do a practice run. He went into the loop too hot and nearly lost the front end, but managed to make it through and came out P12, a good showing but not as stylish as Fabio!

For a while, this was one of those not so interesting Moto2 races, as Alonso Lopez was leading through most of the race. It did get a bit feisty with two laps to go when Aron Canet and Jake Dixon got stuck into a bit of a battle and then Ai Ogura joined in the fun. Jake was showing a lot of determination looking to take a podium at his home GP, and this kept him ahead of Canet, who took a punt from Ogurasan’s front tyre but managed to stay on.

On the last lap, Augusto Fernandez went into hyper mode! Not sure if he has an onboard supply of Red Bull, but certainly something gave him wings as he closed in on Alonso Lopez at the second to last corner and overtook Alonso for the lead in a sensational manoeuvre, and through Luffield and to the line you could have thrown a handkerchief over them. Lopez did not look too upset, he rode a good race, and he is a class act coming to the paddock late to replace Fenati, and he’s a nice lad. Jake Dixon took a well-deserved podium for the Brit fans.

The Results:

P1 Augusto Fernandez, Red Bull KTM Ajo. P2 Alonso Lopez, CAG Speed Up. P3, Jake Dixon, GASGAS Aspar Team.

A big shout out to one of our favourite BSB riders, Rory Skinner, who had a wild card slot in the American Racing team in the Moto2 for Silverstone, and will again in Austria. He made amazing progress throughout the weekend and acquitted himself well in his first Moto2 race.
