Qualifying:

Quali produced a strong line-up with Raul Fernandez on pole, Sam Lowes P2 and Jorge Navarro P3.

The Race:

It was a flying start for Raul Fernandez, making a statement from the get-go, firmly keeping his Red Bull Team Ajo teammate Remy Gardner and Sam Lowes behind him. Almost immediately we had a crash, and that was Augusto Fernandez, sadly the first of many during this race.

Seventeen laps to go and Jorge Navarro crashed out, but still, up at the front, it was Raul Fernandez P1, Remy Gardner P2 and Sam Lowes P3. This was the status quo until with 11 laps to go Sam Lowes edged past Remy Gardner and started to pursue Fernandez. Lowes was making progress and keeping Remy Gardner at bay, until, with six laps to go he crashed out, adding to the crash fest tally this race had become, with Fabio Di Giannantonio going out just a couple of laps earlier.

With five laps to go Raul Fernandez looked comfortable with a slight 1.05 second advantage over P2 man Gardner and Joe Roberts P3, 7.5. seconds back from Remy. With four laps to go Remy Gardner had closed the gap to Raul very slightly but looked like he might have something to make what had been a crash strewn race into something a bit more, well, racey. Corner by corner, lap by lap Remy started to pull Raul in, Fernandez’s tyres seemingly going off a bit at the very end, and Remy maybe saving something for a final hurrah.

The last lap suddenly made this race one you needed to be on the edge of your seat for, as Remy Gardner slid under Raul Fernandez to take the lead with a last gasp, and made it stick. It was great, clean, precise racing from the two teammates, and a joy to watch. Behind these two combatants, there was a feisty battle between Joe Roberts and Marco Bezzecchi, with Roberts just pipping Marco by 100ths of a second, only Joe’s celebrations did not last long when he was demoted to 4th for exceeding track limits.

The Results:

P1 Remy Gardner Red Bull KTM Ajo, P2 Raul Fernandez Red Bull KTM Ajo and P3 Marco Bezzecchi, Sky Racing Team VR46.

There was a total of ten riders who crashed or retired from the race, not a good statistic, we will see if it will be more racing than crashing at Barcelona.
